Primary School

Primary School

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an international curriculum framework designed for children between the ages of 3-12 years. At ISAWH Kindergarten , EY1 (2-3 years old) adopts some of the relevant IB PYP elements to be aligned with the rest of the grades. The PYP focuses on holistic learning initiatives for international students. It provides a rigorous, stimulating and academically challenging programme for students.

As a transdisciplinary, inquiry-based and studentcentred education with responsible action at its core, the PYP remains trusted, timeless and transformational. Through the PYP, students experience learning that is engaging, significant, challenging and relevant as it spans between, across and beyond traditional subject boundaries.

The enhanced PYP framework emphasizes the central principle of agency that is threaded throughout the new organizing structure of the programme: the learner, learning and teaching and the learning community. Augmenting the focus of the “written, taught, and assessed” curriculum with the human elements—the learner and the learning community—underlines that everyone connected to the school community has voice, choice and ownership to impact learning and teaching.

The Essential Elements of the PYP are

  • Knowledge:What we want students to know?
  • Concepts:What do we want students to understand?
  • Approaches to Learning (ATL):What do we want students to be able to do ?
  • Learner Profile and International Mindedness:What do we want students to be?
  • Student-Initiated:How do we want students to reflect, make choice and be able to act?

Features of the PYP

Language

There are 3 Programmes, 5 Language Pathways with 3 Learning Domains in order to provide all learners access to develop their languages fully.

Agency

Under the new PYP programme enhancement, student agency is a shift towards a greater emphasis for providing more deliberate autonomy for our students to developing their leadership. This form of leadership can be viewed as deliberate, independent decision making for one’s own success or leading synergistically within a group.

Inquiry-Based

Inquiry is the pedagogical approach of the PYP. Inquiry is the process initiated by the students the teacher that moves the students from their current level of understanding to a new and deeper level of understanding. In an inquiry play-based classroom, students are actively involved in their learning. They formulate questions, investigate widely and then build new understandings, meanings and knowledge. That knowledge may be used to answer a question, to develop a solution or to support a position or a point of view. The knowledge is usually presented to others and may result in some sort of action. An inquiry approach emphasizes ‘learning how to learn’ and ‘how to find out’ using both traditional and contemporary methods. In the PYP it is believed that teaching about central ideas that are concept based, leads to the most substantial and enduring learning.
